33 years ago, Hurricane Andrew, one of the most powerful storms on record, made landfall in Miami-Dade County as a Category 5 storm, wreaking death and destruction in its path before continuing on to Louisiana. Air Station Miami was one of the first to respond to the devastation in Homestead, aiding our neighbors in any way we could. There’s before Andrew, and after Andrew. ⁠⁠On August 24, 1992 at around 5 in the morning, Hurricane Andrew made landfall in South Florida. At the time, Andrew was recorded as the most destructive storm in U.S. history causing around $26 billion in damage and destroying almost 100% of the mobile homes in the Homestead area.⁠⁠Today it is considered the third most powerful storm of the 20th century behind the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935 and Hurricane Camille in 1969.
