👆Grab free PDA video guide if you struggle like this or are new to PDA and trying to figure it out. PDA stands for pathological, demand avoidance, a.k.a. persistent drive for autonomy. It’s considered to be a profile of autism affecting approximately 1 in 5 autistic kiddos. Typical autism or parenting strategies don’t work with these kids! ##PathologicalDemandAvoidance##AutismParenting##PDASupport##PDAAutism

PDA Autism (Pathological Demand Avoidance) describes a profile within the autism spectrum where individuals have an extreme, anxiety-driven need to avoid everyday demands and expectations, even things they want to do, to maintain a sense of control, often using social strategies, excuses, or mood swings to resist. It's not a separate diagnosis but a specific way autism presents, characterized by intense autonomy-seeking and significant challenges with routine, instructions, and internal needs li

So many parents of PDA children get their autism diagnosis are are presented with no insurance-covered supports other than ABA. But for many PDA children and teens, ABA is not helpful, and can make things worse. Yet when we ask insurance about other approaches, we’re told they aren’t evidence-based. I long for the day that this is not the case, and both ABA and other approaches are health-insurance-covered options for parents of PDAers. Until that happens, our families simply do not have suffici

PDA us currently considered a profile of the autism spectrum, but there are many PDA children, teens and adult who do not consider themselves autistic. I personally support giving people full autonomy to identify as they wish. ❤️ Want to join me and a community of parents who understand your challenges and tradeoffs - because they have many of the same ones - to learn and implement more accommodations to support your PDA child or teen for the long term? "What aspects of PDA do you wish more people understood?" Most people don’t understand what PDA (Pathological Demand Avoidance) truly is. Not only that—they often don’t believe it exists. It’s hard to explain PDA because so much of it challenges the narrow view society holds about human behavior. Too often, people see things as black and white: you’re either trustworthy or untrustworthy, good or bad. This way of thinking shapes whether someone believes when a PDA individual can’t do something, r

💡 “How do I tell the difference between PDA, teen grumpiness, overwhelm, and burnout?” Spoiler: You don’t always have to. Parenting is messy, especially in a PDA household. Sometimes it feels like a roller coaster with no clear path forward, and that’s okay. The truth is, we won’t always get it right. We’re human. We get grumpy, tired, or triggered. The key isn’t perfection—it’s connection. When we misstep, owning up to it with honesty and transparency teaches our kids that it’s okay to be impe

Trying to get a child with a pda profile. Pathological Demand avoidance or as we like to say “persistent demand for autonomy to do anything is soooo hard ! And this is what often frustrates me when people assume low needs because she can speak. Hallie has high sensory needs and has a sensory processing recognised diagnosis. But throwing pda in the mix makes it so hard because she can’t always regulate for herself or know when she is over or under stimulated… i have to help her…. And even though

Why Your PDA Child Won’t “Let” You Play With Siblings It’s not because they’re: ❌ selfish ❌ spoilt ❌ jealous ❌ controlling It’s because of their nervous system. For a PDA child, you are their safe person. When your attention goes to someone else, their brain hears: 🚨 “I’m losing safety.” 🚨 “I’m not secure.” 🚨 “Something is changing.” And that triggers panic. #pda #autism #adhd
