When I zoom close to the mesh, maya face selection will start to jump to faces I do not want to select. This is frustrating, given I purchased maya for the sole purpose to use it on my laptop.

Create sketch on a face, project geometry then create face based on that profile - repeat this many times, using the bend tool to connect edges where appropriate to complete the sheet metal design.
