If you look at modern composite frames, they use essentially woven carbon-fiber fabric to make rigid resin frames. Pencil lead and dry lube is a different form of crystalline graphite.

Some reel manufactures who claim carbon and just using cheap graphite, and then others will use carbon fiber impregnated ABS. The ratio of carbon fiber to ABS makes a big difference. Usually the ones using a high % of carbon fiber will use it on the sideplates only.

Cork is higher quality on the Avid, it looks to me like the guide wraps are different. And of course the warranty - 5 vs 15 years. I think aesthetically the Avid's look nicer.

Aug 9, 2013 · The reality is, "IM" is a term used by one company, (Hexcel) that manufactures carbon fiber, not fishing rods, just carbon fiber. Not only is IM not an industry standard for grading/describing graphite, it's only used by one company that produces graphite. Within Hexcel's products, a higher IM number doesn't even mean a higher modulus.

Mar 14, 2017 · The point is this folks...just because you have a blank made from a high modulus fiber, doesn't means it's a good rod! And vice versa, just because you have a blank with a low modulus...even the original fiber blanks were made with (33 million) doesn't mean it's a bad or outdated rod. It's all about what the designer does with it.

Apr 29, 2021 · The graphite used today is much better than the plastic utilized back in the days as we transitioned away from all metal reels. The carbon frames and sideplates consist of a 30/70 ratio carbon nylon blend and are very strong. I personally have never had any issues with the current graphite frame reels against 1 piece aluminum reels.
