Māori Language Week is an annual celebration held in the third week of September. This year it takes place from September 15 to 22.The initiative, also called ‘Te Wiki o te Reo Māori,’ is government-sponsored. It aims to inspire New Zealanders to speak the Māori language proudly.

Sep 5, 2024 · Te Wiki o te Reo Māori – Maori Language Week is celebrated from the 14th – 21 st of September 2024. I’ve put together this blog post to highlight free and low-cost resources to use during this week (and hopefully all year!).

This is a time for all New Zealanders to celebrate te reo Māori (the Māori language) and to use more Māori phrases in everyday life. In 2024 Māori Language Week runs from 14 – 21 September and the theme is ‘Ake ake ake – A Forever Language’.

Te Wiki o te Reo Māori (English: Māori Language Week) is a government-sponsored initiative intended to encourage New Zealanders to promote the use of the Māori language which is an official language of the country. Māori Language Week is part of a broader movement to revive the Māori language.

Te Wiki o te Reo Māori is in Hepetema (September) annually. The campaign is an essential part of achieving the goal of 1 million speakers of te reo Māori in 2040. Māori Language Week has been celebrated in Aotearoa since 1975.

What is Māori Language Week? Māori Language Week, Te Wiki o te Reo Māori, is a time for all New Zealanders to celebrate and encourage the use of te reo Māori in the classroom, home, workplace, community and beyond.

Our virtual Māori Language Moment - where we celebrate te reo from wherever we are - was held on Tuesday 14th September at 12pm. Māori Language Week celebrates the presentation of the Māori Language Petition to parliament on the 14th September 1972.
