Mary Ainsworth’s Strange Situation was developed to examine the attachment between mothers and children in an unknown environment. During the original experiment, children between the ages of 12 and 18 months from a sample of 100 typical American families were observed.

The test is called The Strange Situation Technique because it is conducted in a context that is unfamiliar to the child and therefore likely to heighten the child’s need for his or her parent (Ainsworth, 1979).
