Sorghum × drummondii (Sudan grass), is a hybrid-derived species of grass raised for forage and grain, native to tropical and subtropical regions of Eastern Africa. It may also be known as Sorghum bicolor × Sorghum arundinaceum after its parents.

There are multiple cultivars of sorghum available for use as a cover crop including sorghum-Sudangrass hybrids (Sorghum bicolor x Sorghum bicolor var. sudanense). However, all sorghum and Sudangrass-related species have the potential to smother weeds, suppress nematode species, and penetrate compacted subsoil (Clark, 2007).

Mar 30, 2021 · Sudangrass and sorghum are both in the species Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench (Munz, 1973; Fribourg, 1985). Sudangrass was formerly Sorghum sudanense (Piper) Stapf. (Hitchcock, 1971) and Sorghum vulgare var. sudanese Hitchcock (Marks and Townsend, 1973).

This warm-season hybrid grass is used for forage for horses and cows, as a means of erosion control, and as a cover crop for weed suppression. Its stems are finer than other sorghum sudangrass hybrids. Growing very quickly, it surpasses other varieties of forage sorghum.

Sudan grass (Sorghum × drummondii (Steud.) Millsp. & Chas) is an annual grass with slender culms (3-9 mm thick) reaching up to a height of 3 m. The light green leaves are long (4-15 cm), broad (8-15 mm) and very numerous. Inflorescences are panicles ending in short fragile racemes. Spikelets are paired, 6-7 mm long.
