Gerhard Richter (German: [ˈɡeːɐ̯haʁt ˈʁɪçtɐ]; born 9 February 1932 [1]) is a German visual artist. Richter has produced abstract as well as photorealistic paintings, photographs and glass pieces.

In 1963, together with Polke, Lueg, and Kuttner, Richter founded the Capitalist Realism group, whose works came to be known as German Pop Art. During this period, Richter created paintings that were based on photographs he collected, such as Party (1963) and Women Descending the Staircase (1965).
