All-electric vehicle maker Rivian Automotive has announced it is laying off 4.5% of its workforce amid mounting market pressures, the company said Thursday.

Rivian Automotive is laying off 4.5% of its workforce, or over 600 employees, an internal email showed on Thursday, as the electric-vehicle maker contends with weakening demand following the expiry of key U.

The United States added 699 direct-current fast-charging stations and more than 4,000 individual charging ports in the third quarter of 2025, according to Paren, an EV charging data platform. That brings the national totals to 12,375 stations with 64,486 ports.

The company is rebranding its “Uber Green” service as “Uber Electric” and launching a grant program for drivers after the expiration of the federal EV tax credit.

Renters, who are far less likely to own EVs than homeowners, represent a potentially game-changing untapped market in a state where growth for battery-electric and plug-in hybrid cars has stalled in recent years (aside from a recent spike between July and September, as buyers raced to use the federal tax incentive before it expired on Oct. 1).
