In 1945, the U.S. 1st Army crossed the Rhine at Remagen, Germany after capturing the strategically important Ludendorff Bridge (also known as the Bridge at Remagen).
Most bridges were destroyed by the retreating Germans on the Rhine River, but the Ludendorff Bridge at Remagen remained intact. A fierce battle for the bridge and the vital crossing ensued.
