They bought their new house — built in 2003 — and moved in a couple of months later, after bathroom remodeling was finished and the workers had left.
It was a much-needed renovation for a nearly 40-year-old house. In 2013, when Hutson got a new job in The Woodlands, he decided to give up his Houston apartment and buy his first home closer to work.
After four months of remodeling and updating the two-story house plus its basement and landscaping, the property was put it back on the market at $639,000.
The kitchen, photographed above before the remodel, was tiny and had a small stove squeezed into in an alcove, old-style 18-inch-deep counters and few cabinets.
The house was later used as a boarding home and office building, and was nearly demolished before renovation efforts in the 1990s. It is now on the National Register of Historic Places.
