As you can see in the photo above, Nest is trying to do for smoke detectors what it's already done for thermostats. Which is to say, it's trying to take a mundane household object and make it sexy.

Nest Protect is an attractive-square contraption with rounded edges that combines smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. It comes in white or black and costs $129, pricier than typical detectors.

The answer is, of all things, a smoke detector. The $129 Nest Protect, launching this fall, is a handsome white square with rounded corners and an op-arty sunflower pattern.
