The fire has been given the nickname the "gator fire" because it is burning off Gator Trail, north of Martin Highway. Martin Fire Rescue District Chief Tom Hornbostel was asked about a possible cause.

PALM CITY — Lightning caused the "Gator Fire" that swept across more than 188 acres of Martin County this week, causing about 32 home evacuations, according to the Florida Forest Service.
