On the high end, that’s a 44% ease for Dog Man, which would be higher than the previous Dav Pilkey big-screen take, 2017’s Captain Underpants, which declined 49% in weekend 2 with a $12.1M take.

However, Dog Man did not make an appearance in the 2017 “Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie” (which has been the only one to date) and Universal marketing didn’t note the connection.

Dog Man captures the same type of child humor and action as the comics. It should feel familiar to audiences who watched Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie, which DreamWorks released in 2017.

He’s also the author behind the Captain Underpants books; that brand was adapted into a 2017 20th Century Fox movie that opened to $23.8M and legged out to $73.9M stateside.

Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie isn’t without flaws, including some pacing issues that indicate its 89-minute runtime could’ve been trimmed down further.
