Bier's father, a former NYPD detective, was grazed in the face while on the job in Manhattan "when my kids were small," Betty Bier said. "I think it's worse with a son," she added.

Bier's mother, Betty, told WCBS 880's Sophia Hall it was gut-wrenching to get a call saying her son had been shot. "Not good for a mother. Horrible. I had no heart, no stomach, no nothing," she said.
