Karunaratne believes that is a factor in him falling short of a goal he set himself, to score 10,000 Test runs, something that Australia's Steve Smith achieved in the first Test against Sri Lanka last week.

Former Sri Lanka captain Dimuth Karunaratne will retire from international cricket after playing his 100th Test. Sri Lanka are scheduled to take on Australia in the second and final Test in Galle from 6 February.

Australia wrapped up the first test against Sri Lanka with a session and a day to spare, handing the hosts their biggest defeat in test cricket.

Dimuth Karunaratne has scored 7,172 runs at an average of just under 40, with 16 centuries and 34 half-centuries in 99 Tests over nearly 14 years.
