Charges are pending Monday against a Buena Park homeowner who allegedly operated an illegal Fourth of July fireworks display that misfired, killing an 8-year-old girl.

A large illegal fireworks display, placed in the street by the homeowner, failed and began misfiring toward the home where the child was, police said.

The cause of the fire, which burned 78 acres, remained under investigation, according to Cal Fire, the state firefighting agency.
