A California Highway Patrol cadet died Sunday in a collision on Interstate Highway 5 at West Benjamin Holt Drive in northwest Stockton.

The artillery rounds were fired over Interstate 5 near Camp Pendleton in San Diego as part of a military demonstration for the Marine Corps' 250th anniversary.

While no one was hurt, experts say the decision to fire live munitions over the freeway during the ceremony was highly unusual.

Artillery rounds also were launched over the freeway during a rehearsal for the demonstration attended by Vice President JD Vance and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.

And after a half-day of back-and-forth between Gov. Gavin Newsom and the White House, it seems as if all talk of shutting down Interstate 5 in California will not take place.
