Use a pencil compass to strike a 4-in. radius onto the top of each oak end. Measure 1½ in. from the top of the radius to find the center of the 1-in.-dia handle holes.

A speed square can replace a compass for drawing small circles, but a beam compass is the preferred tool for drawing large circles. Attach trammel points to a shop-made beam like a 1x1 piece of wood.
