Adam Sandler has revealed that the sequel to Happy Gilmore had to be rewritten following the death of his co-star Carl Weathers. The Rocky and Predator star died last year, at the age of 76. He famously played Chubbs Peterson, the mentor to Sandler’s Gilmore, in the much-loved 1996 golf comedy.

While the movie features cameos from several high-profile athletes and other non-actors, fan theories surrounding Sydney Sweeney's potential role were also swirling. Even original Happy Gilmore star Julie Bowen, who played Virginia Venit, admitted her kids nearly convinced her Sweeney would replace her in the sequel.

Adam Sandler disclosed in an interview how his upcoming Netflix feature, Happy Gilmore 2, underwent “painful” changes after Carl Weathers’ passing. Weathers played Derick “Chubbs” Peterson in the 1996 original feature.
