For 34 years, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools’ talking school bus has taught bus safety to more than 670,000 children. Many are now old enough to see their own children meet Gus.

In the early 1980s, Gus the Bus, with his goofy grin and cartoonlike eyes, was cutting-edge technology for teaching local schoolchildren about bus safety.

Gus the Bus in Morgan County features tables and benches and sky painting on the roof. Recently, the third-grade students enjoyed the former school bus that's re-purposed as Gus the Bus.

Preschoolers who enrolled in the Gus the Bus program in Rifle, Silt and New Castle this past school year and their families gathered in Rifle’s Centennial Park on June 20 to celebrate their success.

Gus the Bus is amobile preschool classroom sponsored by Smart Beginnings and United Way. Each bus stop is packed with 90-minutes of activities for children up to five-years-old.
