Gong were one of the great cult psychedelic rock bands. Founded in the late 1960s by Daevid Allen (who died in 2015), they charted an brilliantly eccentric course on the fringes of rock’s mainstream.

Smyth returned to Gong in the mid-'90s for the first in a series of reunions, the last of which ended in 2013. "I began with poetry, lines of words," Smyth said of her early technique.
