For the first time, two Black people were nominated to be speaker of the House of Representatives. Conservatives opposed to Kevin McCarthy nominated Rep. Byron Donalds on the 4th ballot on Wednesday.

Democratic Congressman Hakeem Jeffries became the first Black lawmaker nominated for Speaker of the House. He also became the first Democrat since 2007 to earn unanimous support from their caucus.

Scott became the state's first Black speaker of the House in its 400-year history. "We're only a few miles from where the first slaves came into this country in 1619," Scott said.
