President Donald Trump and Colombian President Gustavo Petro defended their views on social media and imposed tariffs on each other’s goods.

The White House is claiming victory in a showdown with Colombia over accepting flights of deported migrants from the U.S., hours after President Donald Trump threatened steep tariffs on imports and other sanctions on the longtime U.

The U.S. and Colombia, long close partners in anti-narcotics efforts, clashed Sunday over the deportation of migrants and imposed tariffs on each other’s goods in a show of what countries could face if they intervene in the Trump administration’s crackdown on illegal immigration.

Colombia’s president said his nation would not accept flights of deported migrants. Then each country announced retaliatory tariffs.

The U.S. and Colombia pulled back from the brink of a trade war on Sunday after the White House said the South American nation had agreed to accept military aircraft carrying deported migrants. U.S. President Donald Trump had threatened tariffs and sanctions on Colombia to punish it for earlier refusing to accept military flights carrying deportees as part of his sweeping immigration crackdown.

Trump said the Colombia's refusal jeopardized U.S. national security. He imposed tariffs on incoming goods, sanctions on government officials, enhanced border inspections of Colombian nationals, and banking and financial sanctions.

The White House said on Sunday that it would hold off on the tariffs, saying Colombia had "agreed to all of President Trump's terms."
