The defeat means Dortmund are 13th and must get a result against Shakhtar Donetsk in their final league phase game to have the chance to qualify automatically for the knockouts. For the first time in the competition, the German side have lost multiple games after scoring the opening goal.

Borussia Dortmund have sacked head coach Nuri Sahin with the team out of the German Cup and struggling in the Bundesliga. Sahin, who was appointed in June as Edin Terzić's replacement, was supposed to usher in a new era but the former Dortmund player's reign has proved short-lived with the team 10th in the league.

Sahin was a ball boy at Dortmund before becoming the youngest player to play in the Bundesliga when he made his debut aged 16. He was assistant coach to Edin Terzić last season
