New in theaters, Flight Risk marks Gibson’s first turn as a director since 2016’s Hacksaw Ridge, which earned Oscar nominations including Best Picture, Best Directing for Gibson and Best Actor for Andrew Garfield. As such, Wahlberg knew going into the film that he was in great hands before the action thriller took flight.

Alissa Wilkinson of The New York Times agrees, noting “Where “Flight Risk” fails as a film is not really Gibson’s fault. He knows how to shoot action sequences. The screenplay is instead all over the place, in a way that feels tired and halfhearted.”

Lionsgate’s Flight Risk soared to the top spot at the box office - earning $11.5 million in its opening weekend. The action-thriller starring Mark Wahlberg held off Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King, which finished in second place with $8.
