Tesla’s long-awaited India debut comes as the government considers lowering EV import duties in a U.S. trade deal.
Beyond the car specs, Tesla cars are known for its cutting-edge automotive technology such as its Autopilot features and Full Self-Driving (FSD) Supervised as well as other unique features such as Bioweapon defence mode.
The Indian version of Tesla’ website lists two models of the only EV it will begin delivering this fall, the Model Y. The entry-level version is a standard range, single-motor, rear-wheel drive Y that offers zero to 62 mph (100 kmh) in 5.9 seconds and a 311-mile (500 km) WLTP range.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis inaugurated Tesla’s first showroom in India on Tuesday (15 July), marking a milestone in the country’s electric vehicle sector, reported The Indian Express.
Despite multiple negotiations, Tesla’s entry into India’s EV market remains unconventional, choosing to import CBUs from China rather than setting up a local manufacturing unit, as required by the government.
