Another proxy for deportations comes from removal flights tracked by Thomas Cartwright, an independent researcher. Though imperfect—flight capacities vary and many deportees travel by bus—the 190 flights in May represent a 56% rise on the six-month average (see chart 3). Most flew to El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico.
