The barn owl’s brilliant white underbelly is the key to its success as a nocturnal hunter, allowing the bird to camouflage itself against the moon, according to new research.
Barn owls come in two shades, reddish brown and white. During a full moon, the white owls fare better than red ones when hunting voles, even though they should be more easily spotted.
