Incredible never-seen-before photos of WWI through the eyes of a German soldier on the frontline emerge. Taken by a medical officer the snapshots document daily life in the trenches and beyond.

“The Ending of the War, Starting Home” (1930-33), is a frontal view of German soldiers behind barriers and barbed wire. One soldier’s arms are raised, as if he is about to surrender.

World War One broke out on 28 July, 1914. Fifty years later, one of the German soldiers, Stefan Westmann, told the BBC about his experiences fighting in the conflict.
