Susan desperately needed to find a family who would give her medical and surgical treatment. One day at church Dr. Straka felt God tell her that the family should take the next step and adopt Susan.

Straka died Dec. 28, 2017, at 80. Susan Barnes-Gelt, who was an assistant to Peña and later a Denver city council member, tells Colorado Matters about Straka's legacy.
