Tens of thousands have crossed into neighbouring countries, including Chad, Egypt, Ethiopia and South Sudan (see map 1). The UN expects as many as 800,000 refugees in the coming weeks and months.

While the road to a fair, credible, and transparent election in South Sudan in 2024 is fraught with challenges, there are opportunities for progress through concerted efforts by all stakeholders.
