American Commercial Barge Line, based in Jeffersonville, Indiana, wants to be a key player in cleaning up the Ohio River. Last year, the company invested $200,000 in restoring inland waterways.

In the Mound City, Ill., area alone — just north of Cairo, where the Ohio meets the Mississippi — the industry is working to refloat tows, according to the American Commercial Barge Line.

Three barges are jammed up against the McAlpine Dam on the Ohio River, just off the shore in Louisville, Ky. Officials say a barge carrying 1,400 tons of methanol is partially submerged.

And now the Ohio River -- which provides about 60% of the Lower Mississippi River’s water ... according to the American Commercial Barge Line.
