NEW YORK (AP) — Montreal Canadiens defenseman Lane Hutson won the 2024-25 Calder Trophy on Monday as the NHL’s rookie of the year. Hutson led rookies in scoring with six goals and 60 assists in his inaugural NHL season as the Canadiens made a surprise return to the playoffs this season.

The Montreal Canadiens returned to the Stanley Cup Playoffs this NHL season for the first time since losing the Cup Final in 2021 to the Tampa Bay Lightning. They finished with a record of 40-31-11, totaling 91 points.

Montreal Canadiens defenseman Lane Hutson was named the winner of the Calder Memorial Trophy on Tuesday. The trophy is awarded annually "to the player selected as the most proficient in his first year of competition in the National Hockey League.
