Speaking with Australia's ABC News, Wally Conron says the Labradoodle and hype around the dog have veered from his original purpose for the mix.

Mixed-breed puppies come largely from unneutered dogs mating, and many end up needing new homes. This poodle/terrier mix is a designer breed known as a terripoo or terridoodle.

A puggle, a mix between a pug and a beagle, is one of the new boutique dogs like “Labradoodles,” a mix of a Labrador and a poodle, that is gaining popularity.

While the poodle mixes have been around for nearly 100 years, they exploded onto the pet scene in the 1990s and early 2000s, and continue to skyrocket in popularity.

The inventor of the labradoodle, the ubiquitous, mopheaded designer dog, said that creating the mixed breed was one of his life’s regrets.

Not only is Cashew just the right size for the Parsons, she is just the right mix: a purebred pomeranian and purebred chihuahua cross, which in designer-dog parlance is called a pomchi.

But not everyone is happy. Paul Keevil from the British and Irish Dog Breeds Preservation Trust is concerned that more labradoodles means fewer pedigree breeds, over 20 of which are under threat.

Doodles as Guide Dogs The first doodle—the Labradoodle—was created with the intention of making a low-shed guide dog for a person who was blind.

The only other mixed breed remaining in the competition, the goldendoodle, was defeated by last round’s Chihuahua slayer, the Yorkshire terrier.
