Created in 1958 by Belgian comic-book artist Peyo, the Smurfs are one of the world’s most recognizable brands. However, on the basis of 2017’s underwhelming Smurfs: The Lost Village—their third and final big-screen outing from Sony Animation—there’s reason to wonder if their stateside popularity has finally run its course.
