One of the largest harmful algae blooms recorded along the Southern California coast has led to the illness and death of thousands of marine mammals and birds in recent months.

A dead juvenile humpback whale has washed ashore on the beaches of Corolla in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. First reported Thursday, officials with the Outer Banks marine Mammal Stranding Network responded to the whale’s carcass to record its information and take scientific photos.
