New York held a contest to select a new license plate design last year. Now, the plate is finally hitting the road in more than a dozen counties.

Issued from 1997 through 2001, the plates generally feature a dark blue serial on the background of a white-gold gradient with the word "OHIO" on top.

The plate design reminded some people of the black and gold colors of the University of Missouri, the former rival of the University of Kansas.
