Venezuela said on Thursday it would release “a significant number” of prisoners in a move its government framed as a gesture “to seek peace.”

Venezuela has begun releasing political prisoners, including some foreigners, in what a senior member of the country’s ruling regime described as an international olive branch.

Oil has emerged as the key to US control over Venezuela, which has the world's largest proven reserves.
