Texas congressman Sylvester Turner died Wednesday, months after filling the U.S. House seat of the late Sheila Jackson Lee.

Washington—Democratic Rep. Sylvester Turner of Texas has died, weeks after taking office. He was 70 years old. Turner also served as Houston's mayor from 2016 until 2024. The city of Houston confirmed his death and Mayor John Whitmire released a statement calling Turner a "remarkable public servant who impacted millions of people.

Sylvester Turner, a Texas Democrat who was just sworn into the House in January after previously serving as mayor of Houston, died on Tuesday night.Turner posted on social media ahead of President Trump’s address to the nation and sat in the chamber for the speech.
