If Leeds have ambitions of staying up, the hothouse atmosphere of Elland Road could hold the key, writes Phil McNulty.

In its first Premier League game for more than two years, Elland Road was jumping, and Leeds almost left with no choice but to play the intense and aggressive football that got their season up and running with a 1-0 win over Everton. David Moyes has seen most things in football, and the visiting manager was impressed.
Leeds United edged past Everton 1-0 in the final match of the 2025-26 Premier League season’s opening weekend. Lukas Nmecha rolled home a late penalty (84’) after James Tarkowski was adjudged to have handled it inside the box.

It meant the likes of Joe Rodon and loanee Manor Solomon were overlooked, albeit the five inclusions saw Leeds become the team most represented. Ex-Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford, now of Manchester City, won the Championship player of the season, beating James and Tanaka to the accolade.
Despite dominating the first half at Elland Road, Daniel Farke’s side couldn’t turn possession to goals. Everton grew into the game during the second 45 minutes, but a controversial James Tarkowski hand ball resulted in a penalty which was expertly converted by the substitute and debutant Nmecha.
Lucas Perri's inclusion in the starting lineup is a statement of intent from Farke. The young goalkeeper, who has been touted as a rising star, brings fresh energy and potential to the Leeds defense. His performance will be crucial as Leeds aims to solidify its backline this season.
